Attributes in Demand

Besides technical skills, which are, of course, paramount for IT job candidates, employers today seek professionals who possess the following:

Multidimensionality: Hiring constraints have encouraged many organizations to seek IT professionals who can perform multiple functions. As a result, well-rounded job candidates may have an advantage over those who are uncomfortable outside a narrowly defined specialty.

Written and verbal communication skills: Professionals ranging from IT managers and systems analysts to help desk staff must be able to explain technology issues to nontechnical employees. As IT takes on more of an advisory role in the company at large, professionals must also understand the business context of IT projects and be able to bring this perspective into their interactions with department heads and senior management.

Certifications: Microsoft certifications are among those in highest demand, notably the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) and Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP). Companies also value Cisco certifications, such as the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). Security is a key priority in any economic climate; many employers prize the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). The Project Management Professional (PMP) credential also remains in demand.

Leadership: As departments find they must do more with fewer resources, they are seeking IT professionals who are able to lead effective teams. The strongest leaders inspire confidence, set a positive example, take ownership and know how to deliver difficult messages.
