Robert Half Technology Salaried Professionals Help Create a Mission-critical Network for a Regional Power System

Company Profile
The client is a large, municipally owned power utility that serves 42,000 households and more than 9,000 commercial customers. The power agency owns, operates and participates in more than 380 megawatts of electrical generating and transmission resources.

Industry: Government
Location: Western United States

Business Dilemma
After operating as part of municipal government for 70 years, this city-owned power agency was mandated by post-9/11 federal, state and industry regulations to establish a separate and secure IT infrastructure. To be compliant and to provide for future growth, the agency had to build a new, mission-critical network infrastructure and establish its own Internet point-of-presence.

The network would include two primary IT sites, five electric substations, two local gas-fired generating plants, a dam and powerhouse hundreds of miles away, and thousands of user sites - as well as critical connections with a multi-city power generation consortium and the power grid ISO's private network.

The city had already purchased three Cisco Systems® routers, two for the network infrastructure and one for the new Internet gateway, plus two SymantecTM firewalls. The next challenge was to find a skilled IT project team to install, configure and bring the new infrastructure and Internet site into production successfully - while seamlessly delivering 24/7 service to system customers.

Robert Half's Technology Solution
Robert Half Technology's Salaried Professional Service was the solution. Utilizing our vast network of specialized IT professionals, we were able to provide a senior network engineer with both the Cisco router experience and the commitment to see the project through. Working with a consultant provided by the Cisco vendor, our consultant helped design, configure, and put the fully compliant network and Internet point-of-presence into production successfully - and has remained with the power agency for more than four years to help maintain and expand its network and services. Today, this consultant is assisting in the implementation of the agency's wireless meter-reading system.

The Bottom Line
Robert Half Technology was able to deliver and retain the high-level IT professionals for this mission-critical project and continuing services - helping to save the municipal government the high salary and benefits costs of city staffing and avoid the risk of independent consultant turnover.
